Peterborough United – Interesting Facts
Peterborough United were officially founded on May 17, 1934, during a public meeting held at the Angel Hotel in Peterborough.
Peterborough & Fletton United (1923–1932): Formed when the earlier club Fletton United added “Peterborough” to their name to gain local backing. They folded in 1932.
Fletton United (1901–1923): Founded as Fletton United, they spent their early years playing in local leagues before taking on a broader regional identity.
Peterborough City (pre-1920): Another early local club that disbanded, with many members moving to Fletton United.
The Brickies: A historic nickname inherited from their predecessor club, Fletton United (formed in the 1920s), which paid homage to the dominant brickmaking industry in the Fletton area.
Clay Dobblers: Another local reference used interchangeably with “The Brickies” during the Fletton United era.
The Posh: The club’s primary nickname was officially coined in 1921 by Pat Tirrell, the manager of Fletton United. When asked about his squad’s ambitions, he stated he was looking for “posh players for a posh team,” and the name stuck. It even survived a famous legal dispute in 2002 when Victoria Beckham (“Posh Spice”) attempted to claim the trademark.
London Road Stadium: The traditional, historical name of the ground.
ABAX Stadium: The name used from 2014 to 2019.
Weston Homes Stadium: The current name of the stadium, secured via a long-term sponsorship agreement that began in 2019.
