Norwich City – Interesting Facts
Norwich City FC was founded on June 17, 1902, following a meeting at the Criterion Café in Norwich. The club was formed by a group of individuals led by Robert Webster and Joseph Nutchey and played their first competitive match on September 6, 1902, against Harwich & Parkeston.
Norwich City FC have always been known as Norwich City FC. The club like most others are a rarity when it comes to still being named their original name when founded.
The Citizens (Pre-1907): Originally known as “The Citizens,” the club played in light blue and white halved shirts, with the name stemming from the city of Norwich itself.
The Canaries (1905–Present): The club’s current and most famous nickname, “The Canaries,” was adopted by roughly 1905–1907, driven by the chairman and keen canary breeder who introduced yellow and green kits to reflect the new nickname.
Other monikers: Sometimes referred to as “The Yellows” or simply “City”.
Newmarket Road (1902–1908): The club’s first home ground after being formed.
The Nest (1908–1935): A former chalk pit (quarry) that became inadequate as crowds grew, with the pitch famously having safety issues.
Carrow Road (1935–Present): Purpose-built in 1935 in just 82 days and has been the home of the Canaries ever since.
