Bolton Wanderers were founded in 1874. The club changed its name to Bolton Wanderers in 1877. They were among the 12 original founding members of the Football League in 1888
1874–1877: Christ Church F.C. (formed from Christ Church School on Deane Road).
1877–Present: Bolton Wanderers F.C. (adopted to reflect the team’s search for a permanent home).

The Trotters: The exact origin is debated, with theories ranging from a local delicacy of pig/sheep’s trotters (often cited by a nearby butcher in the early days) to the word being a local term for a “practical joker”.
