Reading – Interesting Facts
Reading FC was founded on December 25, 1871.
The club was formed by Joseph Edward Sydenham alongside a group of young townsmen at the Bridge Street Rooms. This makes The Royals one of the oldest professional football teams in England.
Reading Football Club has never officially changed its name and has been known as Reading F.C. since its establishment in 1871.

The Royals: Their current and most famous moniker, adopted in the 1970s. It references the fact that Reading is located in the Royal County of Berkshire.
The Biscuitmen: Their original, historic nickname, used until the 1970s. It was a nod to the town’s famous Huntley & Palmers biscuit factory, which was once the largest in the world.
Select Car Leasing Stadium (2021–Present): The current name of the club’s home ground, following a 10-year sponsorship agreement with the leasing company.
Madejski Stadium (1998–2021): The original name of the club’s current stadium, named in honor of former chairman Sir John Madejski.
Elm Park (1896–1998): The club’s historic home for over a century before they relocated to their current, purpose-built ground.
