Plymouth Argyle – Interesting Facts
Originally founded simply as Argyle in 1886, the club turned professional and entered both the Southern League and Western League as Plymouth Argyle in 1903
Argyle Football Club (1886–1894): Founded as an amateur football club, which eventually disbanded and amalgamated with a local team.
Argyle Athletic Club (1897–1903): The club was resurrected as part of a multi-sports organization before transitioning into professional football.
Plymouth Argyle Football Club (1903–present): Adopted when the team turned professional and joined the Southern League.
The Pilgrims: This official nickname honors the famous Pilgrim Fathers, who set sail for the New World from Plymouth aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The club crest features this historic ship.
The Green Army: A popular collective moniker used by and for the club’s passionate supporters, inspired by the team’s traditional green and white kits.
Mount Gould (1886): Following their formation, the club had no ground of their own and initially played early matches at opponents’ grounds before securing a pitch in the Mount Gould area of Plymouth.
Marsh Mills (1889–1890): The fledgling side relocated and played their home fixtures at a new pitch in the Marsh Mills area.
Home Park (1901–Present): Located in the Milehouse area of Plymouth next to Central Park, Home Park is affectionately known as the “Theatre of Greens”. The club initially moved to the site in 1901 (which had been used by the Devonport Albion Rugby Club) and has continuously played there ever since. It is the most southerly and westerly League ground in England
