Rotherham United – Interesting Facts
The club was formed as a merger between Rotherham County and Rotherham Town in 1925 and were immediately placed in the Football League.
Thornhill United F.C. (1877–1905): The club was originally founded in 1877 as Thornhill Football Club before taking the name Thornhill United.
Rotherham County F.C. (1905–1925): The club changed its name to Rotherham County in 1905 and became a Football League club in 1919.
The Millers: This is a nod to the town’s historical roots in corn milling and is the club’s long-standing, official nickname.
The Reds: Used in the early days following the club’s 1925 formation, this was an unimaginative (but accurate) nickname inspired by their team colors.
United: Sometimes used as a shorthand reference by fans and commentators.
Millmoor: The club’s historic home for over a century, hosting matches from their formation in 1925 until 2008.
Don Valley Stadium: Located in nearby Sheffield, this athletics venue temporarily hosted The Millers’ home fixtures between 2008 and 2012 following a dispute over Millmoor’s ownership.
New York Stadium: The club’s current purpose-built home, which opened in 2012. It has been known as the AESSEAL New York Stadium for sponsorship reasons.
