Watford – Interesting Facts
Watford Football Club was founded in 1881 as Watford Rovers. While the club officially recognizes 1881 as its founding year, it later merged with West Herts in 1893.
Watford Rovers (1881–1893): The club was founded as an amateur side named Watford Rovers.
West Herts (1893–1898): The club changed its name to West Hertfordshire (often shortened to West Herts) after becoming the football section of the West Hertfordshire Sports Club.
Watford Football Club (1898–Present): Following a merger with local rivals Watford St Mary’s in 1898, the club adopted its current name, Watford Football Club.
Luton Town
The Hornets: The most popular nickname, chosen after the team shifted from blue/white to yellow/black shirts in 1959, replacing their previous nickname, “The Brewers”.
The Golden Boys: Derived from the yellow color of their kit.
The ‘Orns: A colloquial shortening of The Hornets.
Yellow Army: Refers to the club’s supporters.
Historical Name: Before becoming the Hornets, the team was known as “The Brewers” in the early 20th century due to their association with Benskin’s Brewery, which owned the land at Vicarage Road.
Vicarage Road (1922–Present): Known affectionately as “The Vic,” this has been the club’s home since 1922.
Cassio Road (1898–1922): Also known as the West Herts Sports Ground, this was the club’s home for 32 years prior to the move to Vicarage Road.
