Luton Town – Interesting Facts
John Charles Lomax and George Deacon arranged a public meeting at the Town Hall for the 11th April 1885 to form a “Town” Club by democratic means.
Luton Town FC has not had any official name changes since its formation in 1885. The club was founded on April 11, 1885, through an amalgamation of two existing local teams: Luton Wanderers and Luton Excelsior.
The Hatters: The club’s official and most recognized nickname. Adopted around the time of the First World War, it references the town of Luton’s rich, centuries-long history as a major center for hat making and the straw-plaiting industry.
The Straw Plaiters: The club’s earlier, original nickname. It comes directly from the historic straw-plaiting trade that defined the local economy before evolving into a wider millinery industry.
