Exeter City – Interesting Facts
Exeter City FC was formed as St Sidwell’s United in 1901 before changing its name to Exeter City in 1904. The club’s official history recognizes 1901 as its founding date based on research into its roots.
St Sidwell’s United (1901–1904): Formed in 1901 from St Sidwell’s School old boys and Wesleyan Church members, they played in green and white.
Exeter United FC (1890–1904): A separate local team that merged with St Sidwell’s to form the new City side.
Name Change (1904): At the Red Lion Hotel on Sidwell Street, it was decided that St Sidwell’s United would change its name to Exeter City.
Plymouth Argyle
“The Grecians” Nickname: Originates from the St Sidwell’s area of Exeter, whose residents were often called Grecians. This nickname was kept after the 1904 name change.
Exeter City have had the same home ground since 1904.
Location: St James Road, Exeter, Devon.
Opened: September 10, 1904.
Nickname: “The Park”.
Previous Use: The site was used as a pig farm/nursery in the 17th century before becoming a football ground.
