Burnley Football Club was founded on 18 May 1882. Members of the local rugby club, Burnley Rovers, voted to switch from rugby to association football.
Burnley Rovers (1882): Formed on May 18, 1882, the club was originally named Burnley Rovers. Within days of their first meeting, they dropped “Rovers” and changed the code from rugby to soccer (Association Football).
Burnley Belvedere F.C. (1902–1904): A different entity from the main club during their early history.
Blackburn Rovers
Bolton Wanderers
Preston North End
Blackpool
Before the 1910s adoption of claret and blue, the team was referred to by several other names:
“The Hornets” (1880s): Due to the team’s first kit colours of black and yellow stripes.
“The Turfites” / “The Moorites”: Derived from their home ground, Turf Moor.
“The Royalites”: A nickname used in the 1880s after Prince Albert Victor became the first royal to visit a football ground (Turf Moor) in 1886.
Origin of Current Name
The club has been officially known as Burnley Football Club since the late 1800s, usually shortened to “Burnley FC” or by their enduring nickname, “The Clarets”.
Calder Vale (1882–1883): The club’s original home immediately after their formation.
Turf Moor (1883–Present): They moved to the site adjacent to the cricket field in February 1883 and have remained there since.
