When were Chelsea founded?

Chelsea FC was founded on March 10, 1905, at The Rising Sun pub (now The Butcher’s Hook) opposite the Stamford Bridge stadium. The club was formed by Henry Augustus “Gus” Mears, who decided to create a new football team to occupy his newly acquired athletics stadium after Fulham FC declined to rent it.

What were they previously named?

Before settling on “Chelsea FC” in 1905, founder Gus Mears considered several names for the new club at Stamford Bridge, including Kensington FC, Stamford Bridge FC, and London FC (or London United). These alternatives were debated because a team named Fulham already existed in the borough.

Who are their local rivals?

Fulham
Brentford
Queen’s Park Rangers

What nicknames have they had?

The Blues (Current): Popularized from the 1960s onwards as the team adopted all-blue kits.
The Pensioners (Original): Used historically as the club logo once featured a Chelsea Pensioner.
The Blue Lions (Obsolete): Used briefly after a lion was added to the club badge in 1952.
The Bridge Boys: A reference to their stadium, Stamford Bridge.
Pride of London: A modern, marketing-oriented moniker.

What home stadiums names have they had?

Chelsea have only had one home ground, Stamford Bridge, where they have played since the team’s foundation. The stadium was officially opened on 28 April 1877 and for the next 28 years it was used by the London Athletic Club as an arena for athletics meetings.
