Manchester City was founded in 1880 (by Arthur and Anna Connell at St Mark’s Church).
St. Mark’s (West Gorton) (1880–1884): Founded by Arthur Connell, daughter of the rector of St. Mark’s Church in Gorton.
Gorton Association Football Club (1884–1887): Following a brief, unsuccessful merger with Belle Vue Football Club, the team reformed under this name.
Ardwick Association Football Club (1887–1894): The club moved to Hyde Road in Ardwick, changing its name to reflect its new home and becoming a professional organization.
Manchester City Football Club (1894–Present): Due to financial difficulties and a subsequent reorganization, the club officially adopted its current name on April 16, 1894

The Citizens (or Cityzens): Developed from “Manchester City,” this nickname emphasizes the club’s local connection to the city of Manchester. It’s often used to contrast with the largely non-local fanbase of rivals Manchester United.
The Sky Blues: Directly refers to the sky blue home kits, which have been worn since around 1892.
The Blues: A straightforward reference to the team’s primary color.
City: A common, shortened name for the club.
Blue Moon: Based on the song “Blue Moon” that has been sung by supporters since the late 1930s/early 1940s.
The Shark Team (Historical): Coined by Pep Guardiola during the 2017–18 Premier League season to describe his team’s relentless winning,
Etihad Stadium / City of Manchester Stadium (2003–Present): Known as the City of Manchester Stadium when it opened in 2003, it was renamed the Etihad Stadium in 2011 for sponsorship reasons.
Maine Road (1923–2003): Located in Moss Side, this was the club’s home for 80 years and was once nicknamed the “Wembley of the North”.
Hyde Road / Bennett Street (1887–1923): The stadium was destroyed by fire in 1920. Forcing the club to move to Maine Road.
