Portsmouth – Interesting Facts
Portsmouth FC was founded on April 5, 1898. The club was formed at 12 High Street, Old Portsmouth, by a group of businessmen including John Brickwood.
Here are the previous legal names of the club:
The Portsmouth Football and Athletic Company (1898–1912)
Portsmouth Football Company Ltd (1912–1999)
Portsmouth City Football Club Limited (1999–2010)
Portsmouth Football Club (2010) Limited (2010–2013)
Portsmouth Community Football Club Limited (2013–Present).
Pompey: This nickname is synonymous with both the club and the city of Portsmouth, often linked to the Royal Naval base. It likely originates from naval abbreviations of “Portsmouth Point” in ship logbooks, or a captured French ship, Le Pompée, often called “Pompey” by locals.
The Blues/Blue Army: Referencing the home kit colors adopted in 1912.
The Shrimps: A nickname from their early existence when playing in salmon pink and claret kits.
The Boilermakers: Originally, this referred to a boisterous group of supporters associated with the naval dockyard who occupied the corner of Fratton Park.
Skates: A derogatory nickname used by opposing fans, most famously by rivals Southampton, though it is not a term used by Portsmouth fans themselves.
Portsmouth FC has had only one home ground in its entire history: Fratton Park. Opened in 1899 in the Milton area of Portsmouth, it has been the club’s sole home since their foundation in 1898.
