They was founded in October 1886 as Dial Square by a group of munitions workers from the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory in South East London.
Dial Square (October – December 1886): Founded on December 1, 1886, by workers at the Dial Square workshop in the Royal Arsenal armament factory. They played their first match on December 11, 1886.
Royal Arsenal (December 1886 – 1893): Shortly after their first game, on Christmas Day 1886, the team changed its name to Royal Arsenal.
Woolwich Arsenal (1893 – 1914): When the club turned professional in 1893 and became a limited company, it was renamed Woolwich Arsenal.
The Arsenal (1914 – 1919): Following a move to North London (Highbury) in 1913, the “Woolwich” prefix was dropped in 1914, and the club became known as The Arsenal.
Arsenal F.C. (1919 – Present): In November 1919, the “The” was dropped, and the club became formally known as Arsenal Football Club.
The Gunners: A direct reference to their origins as munitions makers at the Royal Arsenal.
The Reds: Used in the early days to describe the team’s kit.
The club was also nicknamed “Bank of England club” in the 1930s due to their significant financial power, particularly under manager Herbert Chapman
Arsenal’s home grounds have primarily been known as the Emirates Stadium (2006–present) and the historic Highbury (officially Arsenal Stadium, 1913–2006). Early, short-term grounds included the Manor Ground and Invicta Ground in Plumstead, while the current stadium is occasionally referred to as Ashburton Grove.
