Southampton – Interesting Facts
Southampton FC was founded on 21 November 1885. The club was formed as St. Mary’s Young Men’s Association F.C. (St. Mary’s Y.M.A.) by members of the St. Mary’s Church Young Men’s Association
The club was known as St. Mary’s (1885–1887), Southampton St. Mary’s (1887–1894), and finally Southampton FC (1894 onwards).
The team was nicknamed “The Saints,” which persists to this day.
Southampton FC’s stadium history is defined by two major homes: The Dell (1898–2001) and St Mary’s Stadium (2001–present). The club moved from their “quaint” 15,000-seat, 103-year-old home at The Dell to the modern, 32,000-plus capacity St Mary’s in 2001, returning to their roots in the city center to facilitate growth.
