When were Everton founded?

Everton Football Club was founded in 1878 as St Domingo F.C. to allow the congregation of St Domingo’s Methodist Church to play sport during the winter.

What were they previously named?

St. Domingo F.C. (1878–1879): The club was formed in 1878 by the Reverend Ben Swift Chambers for members of the St. Domingo Methodist New Connexion Chapel in Everton, Liverpool.
Everton Football Club (1879–Present): In November 1879, to allow people outside the chapel congregation to join, the club was renamed Everton Football Club, after the surrounding district.

The Toffees/Toffeemen: The most famous moniker, originating from the 1870s/1880s due to “Ye Anciente Everton Toffee House” and “Mother Noblett’s” toffee shop, which were near the stadium.

Everton play at Hill Dickinson Stadium as of the 2025–26 season. Everton had played at their previous home ground Goodison Park since 1892, having moved from their original home at Anfield following a disagreement with the landowner John Houlding over their rent.
