Sheffield United – Interesting Facts
Sheffield United Football Club was officially formed on March 22, 1889, at the Adelphi Hotel in Sheffield. They were established by the members of the Sheffield United Cricket Club (founded in 1854) to play at Bramall Lane following a dispute with Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheffield United Football Club (1889–present): This has remained the official name since their founding by members of the Sheffield United Cricket Club.
“The Cutlers”: This was the club’s original nickname from 1889 until roughly 1912.
“The Laneites”: A nickname used occasionally in the early years, referencing their home ground, Bramall Lane.
“The Blades”: Their current and most prominent nickname. While city rivals Sheffield Wednesday used this name in their earliest years, United claimed the nickname after Wednesday became known as “The Owls” around 1907.
“Red and White Wizards”: An alternative nickname for the club.
From 1873 through to the formation of Sheffield United in 1889 the club listed Bramall Lane as their primary ground, also playing games at Newhall, Ecclesall Road, and the Old Forge ground in Attercliffe.
