Sunderland AFC was founded in October 1879 as the “Sunderland and District Teachers’ Association Football Club” by schoolteacher James Allan.
Sunderland and District Teachers Association Football Club (1879–1880): The club was founded in October 1879 by schoolteacher James Allan to provide “recreational amusement” for local schoolteachers.
Sunderland Association Football Club (1880–present): In October 1880, the club opened to non-teachers, leading to the name change, although it is often cited that this change happened on September 25, 1880, or in 1879 based on different historical accounts.

Sunderland A.F.C’s official nickname is The Black Cats, adopted in 2000 following a fan vote. Other, often older or informal, nicknames include The Rokerites (referencing their former home, Roker Park), The Lads, and occasionally The Mackems
