When were Manchester United founded?

Manchester United was founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot. The club later changed its name to Manchester United Football Club on April 26, 1902. This was following a takeover that saved it from bankruptcy.

Newton Heath LYR Football Club (1878–1892): The club was founded by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) depot at Newton Heath.
Newton Heath Football Club (1892–1902): The club dropped the “LYR” from its name after becoming independent of the railway company.
Manchester United Football Club (1902–Present): Following severe financial issues and a winding-up order in January 1902, new investment was found, and the club was renamed on April 24, 1902.

Before settling on Manchester United in 1902, “Manchester Celtic” and “Manchester Central” were considered.
In their early days, they were sometimes referred to as “The Heathens”.
Following the Munich air disaster, the team became famously known as “The Red Devils” in the 1960s, a nickname adopted by Sir Matt Busby from a local Salford rugby team.

What home stadiums names have they had?

Renamed Manchester United in 1902, the club won its first English league championship in 1907–08. In 1910 the club moved from its old Bank Street ground into Old Trafford stadium. Old Trafford has served as the team’s home ever since.
